In 1948, Mr. Liu Ming-Teh, a non-commissioned officer of the Air Force, retreated to Taiwan with the military and settled in the Air Force dependents’ village in Gangshan, Kaohsiung. After leaving the service and facing difficulties making a living, he recalled that his wife had learned the craft of making fermented bean paste in their hometown. With only a few dozen dollars to his name, he began producing Doubanjiang (fermented bean paste) from scratch.

In the beginning, the fermented bean paste was handmade in small batches and wrapped in lotus leaves. Mr. Liu Ming-Teh would ride his bicycle through the streets, selling the freshly made spicy Doubanjiang. Thanks to its authentic ingredients and exceptional flavor, the sauce evoked a deep sense of nostalgia among those from his hometown. Word of its quality quickly spread throughout the military dependents’ village.

As word continued to spread, many people from outside the village began visiting to purchase the Doubanjiang as a local specialty gift to bring home. The reputation of “Gangshan Ming Teh Doubanjiang” soon spread across Taiwan, eventually becoming a well-known household brand of savory sauces.
